The Hexenlochmühle was built in 1825 and is one of the most beautiful old Black Forest mills – romantically situated in a small valley, the Hexenloch. The mill was built as a sawmill. The mill wheels – the large one has a diameter of 4 meters – are driven by the water of the Heubach stream.

Parallel to the panoramic road at an altitude of around 1,000 metres, you can walk around 7 km along the Kapfenbergweg between St. Märgen and St. Peter (or vice versa) (most of this is also possible with a gravel bike). In the winter months, the walk is pleasant in sunshine because it mostly runs along the edge of the forest on the south side of the Kapfenberg slope. When the weather is clear, you can look south from there and see the silhouettes of the higher Black Forest mountains such as Hohwart, Hinterwaldkopf, Feldberg, Toter Mann, Stübenwasen, Hochfahrn and Schauinsland across the Wagensteig valley. The famous wooden Vosges Chapel is also located on the Kapfenbergweg. From St. Märgen, on the outskirts of the town in the direction of Turner, you can reach the Kapfenbergweg via the sports field past the Rankmühle. It ends after around 6 or 7 km, where you then go downhill 200 metres in altitude again via Schmittenbach on an asphalt road to St. Peter.

Kandel Pass

The Kandel offers an ascent of quite alpine quality with the starting point in Waldkirch. A good 900 meters in altitude and up to 13% incline on a narrow mountain road demand one or the other drop of sweat. In general, the route is much wider in the direction of St. Peter/Glottertal, but here too the ravages of time are gnawing, and in some sections you have to be careful on the descent.

The narrow and winding, but well-built little street still has the original charm of an old country road and passes by some farms and hamlets of Prechtal.
