Description
The Owasippe Trails loop from Blue Lake Township, while listed for touring cycling, is truly a mountain biker's playground. This route covers 11.2 miles (18.1 km) with 428 feet (131 metres) of elevation gain, and is estimated to take 1 hour and 31 minutes. Despite its "easy" difficulty rating for touring cycling, be aware that the terrain is rugged and best suited for off-road bikes. If you're a touring cyclist looking for a paved or smooth gravel path, this isn't it; if you're up for an unexpected challenge on a robust touring bike, or better yet, have a mountain bike, this loop offers a unique experience.
What to expect on Owasippe Trails loop from Blue Lake Township
Expect a journey through diverse and rugged terrain, far from your typical touring cycling route. The trail winds through natural singletrack, featuring roots, rocks, and undulating surfaces. You'll encounter considerable elevation changes, including some challenging climbs and descents, with sandy sections that can test your momentum. Keep an eye out for unique features like a floating bridge, a leaning bridge, and the intriguing Marl Bed Bog where the ground perceptibly moves under your wheels. The route offers picturesque views as it traces the shoreline of Wolverine Lake, passing through oak savannahs and reforested lands. This trail is ideal for mountain bikers seeking a varied and technical ride, or adventurous touring cyclists prepared for a very off-road experience.
Planning your visit
Before heading out, be aware of specific access requirements and seasonal closures. A parking permit is mandatory for trail access, and you'll also need to complete a land use waiver form. Crucially, the trails are closed to the public during the summer Boy Scout season, which runs from the second Saturday in June to the third Saturday in August. They are also closed throughout November for deer hunting. Plan your visit outside these times to ensure access and avoid disappointment. There is no public transport directly to the trailhead, so driving is necessary for parking.
