Barton Beach and Cliffs

Highlight • Viewpoint

Barton beach is largely open but, if you keep walking east, you can round the corner and find a secluded section. The views to the Isle of Wight and the Needles sea stacks are wonderful on a clear day.

Be mindful of erosion and never climb over a cliff fall.

View of Barton on Sea Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

Barton on Sea is a picturesque cliff-top village in Hampshire, England, renowned for its stunning coastal scenery and views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. It is closely linked with the town of New Milton.
Cliffs and Coastal Walks: Barton on Sea boasts magnificent cliffs, offering superb coastal walks, including the start of the Solent Way. These cliff-top paths provide sweeping views and are popular for outdoor enthusiasts and paragliders.
Beaches: The shingle beach is generally considered safe for swimming and is well-known for fossil hunting due to its rich geological beds (the "Barton Beds"), which date back to the Eocene Epoch (around 40 million years ago).

View of the Needles

Highlight • Viewpoint

Excellent views on a clear day but can be a struggle with the coastal winds on a rough day - avoid the coastal path in storm conditions as shingle from the beach can be thrown up and make it dangerous.

Rook Cliff

Highlight • Climb

The dramatic Rook Cliff might be just as good as the Hordle Cliff to the west of it along the beach here. You can easily walk on the beach here, passing some sea defences on your way, or stay atop the cliff, admiring the coast from above. Beautiful views!

Hordle Cliff Beach and Beach Huts

Highlight • Structure

This is one beautiful beach and a set of cliffs here in Milford on Sea. The shingle beach is lined by attractive colourful huts down below at the sea level, while one can walk on the cliffs using very comfortable walkways. The views of the vast blue seas, particularly in sunny weather, are simply phenomenal.

View of The Needles

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Needles are a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 100ft out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight in the English Channel, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay and Scratchell's Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost civil parish of the Isle of Wight. The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation. Built in 1859, it has been automated since 1994. The waters and adjoining seabed form part of the Needles Marine Conservation Zone and the Needles along with the shore and heath above are part of the Headon Warren and West High Down Site of Special Scientific Interest
Situated within The Needles is the world famous Marconi Monument, which marks the precise location where Marconi undertook his pioneering work at the end of the 19th Century, which led to radio and all telecommunications as we know it today.

Unstable Coastal Cliff

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

Keep away from cliff edge on this path. Due to frequent substantial collapses and debris falls there are often significant overhangs at the cliff edge that you cannot see. One may not be able to bear your weight!
