Colle di San Giorgio

Highlight • Religious Site

Among all the peaks of the Asolo Hills, Colle San Giorgio (461 meters above sea level) is the one that certainly enjoys the best panoramic view, ranging from the Venetian plain to Monte Grappa and the Dolomite peaks of Cimonega. On better days you can see the domes of the Basilica del Santo in Padua. On the hill there is the small church (oratory) of San Giorgio, an ancient religious site dating back to the tenth century, reachable by a widespread network of more or less well-trodden paths.

Historic Center of Asolo

Highlight • Historical Site

Asolo is a small, walled town with many narrow streets. It is one of the most beautiful medieval 'Borghi' in Italy and is known as the 'Pearl of Treviso'. The small picturesque village is nestled in the foothills of the Dolomites. You can park your car outside the city walls in the underground car park "Cipressina". A steep climb takes you to the city gate 'Portello di Castelfranco' and via the 'Via Browning' you reach the pleasant Piazza Garibaldi.

On the main square, the 15th century Palazzo della Ragione with its beautiful artefacts is worth a visit.

Rocca di Asolo, which rises high above the town, triggers many visitors. If you would like to get to know this castle, check the opening hours in advance. The path to it is a tough one. Unfortunately, we missed the effort ☹. The 'Lock' was locked.

We were able to satisfy our hunger for medieval architecture in the Castello Pretorio. It is a hidden gem in the idyllic town. Free access gives you the opportunity to delve into the long, special history of the fort. It is an early medieval fortress that has had different residents and interpretations over the centuries. Take the time to hit the pause button and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Belevedere della Specola.

On the artistic bench 'Il Bacio' by serverino Morlin, which is placed in the shadow of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, we say goodbye to the 'Pearl of Treviso' with a big kiss.

It was nice to be there for a few hours.

Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption

Highlight • Religious Site

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Asolo
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (formerly also called Santa Maria di Breda) follows the structure of an older Romanesque complex, remodeled in 1747 through a renovation project by Giorgio Massari. The current facade dates from 1889 and is the work of Pietro Saccardo.
The title Cathedral derives from the fact that from the first centuries of Christianity Asolo was a diocese, to which San Prosdocimo, Bishop of Padua, professed allegiance. During the Dark Ages, between barbarian invasions, destruction, famine and plague, the bishopric was abolished by an edict of Emperor Otto I in 969 and episcopal jurisdiction, which also included the government of the territory, passed to the bishop of Treviso.
The title of Cathedral, always claimed by Asolo, thus remained ad honorem, but was still firmly rejected by Treviso. However, all the bishops always made the formal gesture of taking possession of the See of Asolo as the first public act after entering Treviso; It's a practice that continues to this day.
In addition, in the past many bishops also lived in Asolo, in front of the church, in the building that is still called the diocese today. In 1969, on the occasion of the thousandth anniversary of the Edict of Otto, the Holy See restored the episcopal see of Asolo, as a title and without territorial jurisdiction for those bishops who did not have a see.
The cathedral has been awarded titles and privileges by a number of popes throughout its history. Saint Pius X, who was confirmed here and received the tonsure as a cleric, was particularly impressed. John XXIII restored the Collegiata Insignia (1960) and Paul VI. restored the title of bishop (1969).

Medieval water tap

Highlight • Monument

Lavatoio is a medieval washhouse just outside the city walls. Place where women met every day. In the past, the latest facts were shared here while washing and urinating. Now the large, long wash basins are silent witnesses to a distant past.
