The Balze of the Valdarno

Highlight • Canyon

They remember, with due proportions, the most famous American canyons, but if you come from these parts, these too have their particular charm. The Balze del Valdarno, also known as Smotte, are a characteristic geotope, consisting of sands, clays and stratified gravels, up to a hundred meters high, of diversified shapes, interspersed with deep gorges. These are the result of the erosion of the lake's Pliocene sediments of the Upper Valdarno by atmospheric agents and rivers because the Valdarno was a lake.
In addition to my photo, in order to give an idea of what I am, I am attaching one of Marco Faccioli.

View of Loro Ciuffenna

Highlight • Viewpoint

Loro Ciuffenna is located between the Arno river (towards Arezzo) and the hills. All around there are the "Balze", or natural formations of clay and sand up to a hundred meters high. The stone houses built on the gorge of the Ciuffenna river, as well as the cobblestones or streets, recall the medieval origins of the village.

Montemarciano is located on the Setteponti road, the ancient Etruscan-Roman Cassia Vetus road.
In the parish church dedicated to Santa Lucia and San Apollinare, the architrave of the thirteenth-century church is walled up in the entrance. Of particular interest 400 meters from the town of Montemarciano on the Setteponti road is the oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie built in 1522, surrounded by a portico with cross vaults. At the entrance door there is a frescoed lunette with a Madonna and child from the early seventeenth century; inside there are two seventeenth-century altars and a fresco of the fifteenth century believed to be a youthful work by Masaccio: The Madonna Enthroned between San Michele and San Giovanni Battista (from the site of the Municipality of Terranuova Bracciolini).
It was the site of two ancient hospitals for pilgrims, dedicated to Sant'Angelo and San Martino. Initially under the lordship of the Pazzi family, the castle was occupied by the Florentine troops in 1288 and from 1313 it came under the definitive control of Florence. The community of Montemarciano was also included in the so-called "third of Loro" within the Podesta office of Terranuova and had its own municipal council, complete with a rector to be appointed every six months. Regulated by the statutes of the municipality was also the feast of May 8 in honor of San Michelagnolo; the feast that is still celebrated today was then dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie. Of the ancient fortified wall remains Porta Campana, traces of the walls and the Etruscan arch through which a paved road led to the castle of the "Cave", the current road grafted onto the one that crosses the town along its length, was instead built in 1918 starting from the point where there was an ancient tabernacle with paintings, on the sides of Christ on the cross, of San Rocco and San Sebastiano.

The Church of S. Maria in Pian di Scò is located on top of the town. Those who walk the road of the Seven Bridges are in front of the Sacred Building with the three apses and the slender bell tower. The imposing Pieve di Scò turns its back on the main road. A quick glance makes us understand that it has recently been restored and after the restoration the various interventions of man and the events undergone by the monument are well read.
This ancient parish church has a great history. Although the precise year of its foundation is ignored, however from the whole of its architecture we can assume that it arose around the year one thousand. The first document in which it is mentioned dates back to 12 March 1008. In that year it was named in a donation made by the noble family Ubertini in favor of the Abbey of Santa Trinita in Alpe.
Another document mentions some land located in the plover of Pian di Scò donated to the church of Gastra. Some historians believed that this Píeve belonged and depended on the Apostolic See, but the documents issued by the Pontiffs Pasquale II (1103), Innocenzo II (1134) and Anastasio IV (1153) confirmed the jurisdiction over this church to the bishops of Fiesole.

Iris Fields of Setteponti

Highlight • Natural

THE WONDERFUL #GIAGGIOLO (or #iris)!

On the #Setteponti, in the direction of #Firenze, at this time of the year, you can admire the fields where the #giaggiolo is grown. Its cultivation began in Tuscany in the mid-1800s, reaching significant production quantities thanks to the demand from French and northern European companies for the use of iris powder in perfumery and distilleries.

The Tuscan product is highly sought after and competitive due to the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of its components.

The typical cultivation areas are the two hilly and mountainous areas of the #Pratomagno Aretino, crossed by the Setteponti, where I took this photo between #Reggello and #PiandiSco ', and of the Florentine Chianti.

Iris is a rustic plant grown on the edge of terraced fields, in soils not suitable for other crops.

Iris is a crop that is an integral part of the Tuscan tradition and an extremely important agri-environmental resource for the local economy, therefore it requires protection for landscape, historical and cultural reasons.
