Costa Nova to Vagueira Cycle Path, Ria de Aveiro Nature Reserve

Highlight • Cycleway

This cycle path was newly built in 2012 and consists partly of concrete and partly of wooden planks that lead across the nature reserve. It is a good five kilometers long. The entrance to the Costa Nova campsite is on the path.

Southern start of the coastal bike trail along the west side of the Aveira Lagoon, between Vagueira and Costa Nova. Even though it runs parallel to the paved road, it is a quite natural setting with a new bike trail, alternating between pavement, compacted gravel, and wooden boardwalks where it crosses sensitive dune habitats.

Vagueira Beach 🏖️

Highlight • Beach

A wide, smooth boardwalk runs along the wide sandy beach of Vagueira, which is still used by fishermen. Here a few continue with their small scale fishing traditions, even if pulling in the fish-laden nets is now done by tractor rather than bull. Known as Xávega art, this technique of fishing dates back to the 19th century: small boats venture out into the waves to drop their nets; and local fishermen pull their nets back to land, with the help of many men and tractors. A tradition that is less and less practiced, but that should not be lost. Today the beach attracts large numbers of tourists during the peak summer season. A pontoon creates a windbreak effect. The choppy seas are good for surfers and not particularly dangerous, with a perfect western sunset exposure.

Rua Borda do Mar - Praia do Areão to Vagueira

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

While the east side of the Aveira Lagoon is hugged by an excellent car-free packed-dirt bike trail, the paved coastal road does have the occasional car in summer, but for the rest of the year is virtually car-free and offers more access opportunities to the amazing beaches all along its western side. The lagoon on the east side of the road is also always an interesting wetland with many places to stop at

Areão Beach, located in the municipality of Vagos (between Vagueira and Gafanha da Boa Hora), is a place of great natural beauty where the Aveiro Lagoon meets the Atlantic Ocean, albeit indirectly through the Mira Canal which ends nearby. It is a point of interest that is part of the Great Route of the Aveiro Lagoon.

Coastal Cycle Path - Mira Canal

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The coastal bike route (EuroVelo1) follows a long stretch of the canal formed by the occlusion of the rivers restricted from flowing directly into the ocean by the sand build up along the shore, eventually forming the large Aveiro lagoon, where the rivers finally break through to the ocean.
