View of the Cuckmere meanders

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Cuckmere is a river in England that rises near Heathfield in East Sussex in the south of the Weald and flows into The Channel. The site of the estuary is called Cuckmere Haven. In its upper reaches, the Cuckmere has numerous tributaries of which the River Bull is the most important.

The name probably comes from an Old English term for 'fast flowing': the drop in the first 7 km is more than 100 meters. Near its mouth, the river meanders through the Cuckmere Valley, a tidal lake nature reserve.

Take it easy up this steep staircase! There’s a treat at the top for you as a reward!
Kid tip - grab a piece of chalk and write your name or encouragement to other hikers on the steps!

Stone Steps on the Vanguard Way

Great set of steep steps here, didn't count them but would be a great add to a trail run.

View of Litlington White Horse

Highlight • Natural Monument

We spotted the Litlington White Horse, a chalk mural on the hillside to the west side of the River Cuckmere, from this spot along the South Downs Way. My Uncle is a ranger for the South Downs National Park and confirmed that the horse gets fresh chalk on a regular basis to keep it bright!
