Alfter Castle

Highlight • Castle

The origin of the castle goes back to the 12th century. After multiple destruction and in each case a makeshift reconstruction, the castle complex was converted into a baroque palace in 1721. The two-storey mansion with the flanking towers was largely based on the style of the previous buildings, and a three-wing outer bailey was built. Since 1188 the office of the electoral Cologne hereditary marshal was connected to Alfter Castle. In 1445 the complex came into the possession of the old counts and later princes of Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck.

Until 2009, the palace housed the architecture department of the nationally known Alanus University of Art and Society, which is now housed on Campus II of the university on Bonn-Brühler-Straße.

Located slightly above Alfterer Ort, the "Böhling" offers a good view of the village at its feet and a good bit beyond: to Bonn and across the Rhine to the Siebengebirge; and on the other side in the direction of Wesseling and Cologne.

Five-Trunked Oak and Wayside Cross

Highlight • Natural Monument

The oak is worth seeing and certainly offers great shade on hot summer days. We liked the crossroads below. Unfortunately, it was too cold to linger.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses [here in the form of a memorial cross] were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus. So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.”

There is an artist's workshop in this building, many sculptures can be seen on the meadow and a little further along the way, you have a wonderful view of the valley, nature and pure art
