Lago di Montespluga

Highlight • Lake

The lake was formed by the construction of two dams, one of which bears the date 1931 (which suggests that it was built during the fascist era, as part of the major works policy). Situated at an altitude of 1901m, it offers the opportunity for a break before finishing the ascent of the pass.

The whole place is a dream. Definitely go there, it's worth it not just for a short detour. Numerous places with locations to stop off. Also a few shopping possibilities. The Castell in front of a spectacular rocky backdrop. The rock formed by ice and water is also a special picture for geologists, as is the course of the Mera river between the houses. In my opinion, highly recommended!

Splügen

Highlight • Settlement

The southern Swiss town of Splügen was and is a typical mountain pass village. Then as now, merchants, artists and tourists stopped here before continuing on their way north or south. Before the construction of the Bernardino and Gotthard tunnels, the Splügen Pass was the only direct transfer route to the south. Old warehouses and customs posts still characterize the times of yesteryear.

You can live particularly peacefully and eat very, very well in the “Hotel Bodenhaus”. It is rumored that Napoleon, Queen Victoria and Albert lived here. More information: hotel-bodenhaus.ch.

Yes, first downhill today, then uphill. My journey was long enough...
The entire route is in very good condition for racing bikes. Light doesn't hurt as there are over a dozen galleries and tunnels, some well lit, some less so.
From Chiavenna it goes uphill with 7-10%. In the Italian 🇮🇹 midday heat that's not optimal, but the heat training …
