Przemyśl Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

On this popular, slightly sloping square, you will discover a beautiful fountain with a statue of a bear and her cub. Very beautiful buildings surround it. There is also a sign indicating that Santiago de Compostela is exactly 4,031 kilometers away. You are without knowing it on one of the roads leading to Compostela from Poland.

The monument to the good soldier Švejk is located on the market square in Przemyśl. It depicts the figure of Švejk sitting on a box of ammunition, holding a mug of beer in his left hand and a pipe in his right. The author of the monument is the sculptor Jacek Szpak. It was unveiled in the summer of 2008.

During the Schweikko Maneuvers in 2016, a dog was unveiled whose bowl systematically fills with pennies thrown in by tourists.
In 2017, next to Švejk, the Instruction Manual for the statue of the Good Soldier Józef Švejk was placed, which reads:

If you grab Józef Szwejk for:
1. Hat - you will be smart
2. Nose - you will be happy
3. Epaulettes - you will advance
4. A pipe - a joy for a woman
5. A pint - you won't be thirsty
6. Shoes - they won't get you out of work
7. Ears! - you will be considered a spy
Attention! You can use one beneficial option.

This church is called Cathedral of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist in Przemyśl. That's a long time to say.

From the middle of the 12th century a Romanesque rotunda appeared; then added a Gothic cathedral, partially destroyed and replaced by a Baroque cathedral built in the years 1724-1744. In 1733 the roof collapsed and was rebuilt in 1744.

By visiting the church you will understand its entire eventful history.

Przemyśl Castle

Highlight • Castle

Not far from the old town, on the bank of the San River, there is a royal castle built in the Gothic style by Casimir the Great on the site of an earlier wooden stronghold. Burned by the Vlachs in 1498, in the first half of the 16th century it was rebuilt by the staroste of Przemyśl, Piotr Kmita, as a bastion castle in the Renaissance style. The gate, towers with an attic, some rooms and fragments of curtains have been preserved. Currently, it houses Fredreum - the oldest amateur theater in Poland (founded in 1869).

Initially, the church belonged to the Jesuits. From the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century it served as a warehouse. Until the 1990s, it served as a garrison church. In 1991, John Paul II handed it over to the Przemyśl-Warsaw Archeparchy.
