Description

The Steamboat Rock Trail loop from Cabin 2 offers a rewarding hike that packs a punch for its length. This easy 3.3-mile (5.2 km) hiking route, with 822 feet (251 metres) of climbing over roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes, is perfect if you're looking for expansive views without committing to an all-day trek. It's a great option for those who want a good workout to start, followed by leisurely exploration at the top.

What to expect on Steamboat Rock Trail loop from Cabin 2

The trail begins with a pleasant, relatively flat path, easing you into the journey. However, don't let the overall "easy" rating fool you; the ascent to the top of Steamboat Rock is notably steep in sections, requiring careful footing on loose rock and dirt. Once you conquer this initial climb, the route on the butte's summit becomes much gentler, meandering across the flat top. From here, you're treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of Banks Lake, the vast Grand Coulee, and the distinctive basalt cliffs and scablands that define this unique landscape. It's a trail that suits hikers ready for a short, intense climb rewarded by stunning panoramas.

Planning your visit

This trail is best enjoyed in spring and autumn when temperatures are milder, as there is very little shade along the exposed route, making summer hikes very hot. Be aware of the possibility of encountering rattlesnakes, especially during warmer months. The trailhead is easily accessible from the vicinity of Cabin 2, often near the campground, providing convenient parking for your adventure.
