Chapel between Herb and Ütterath

Highlight • Religious Site

Since the Herb Chapel - also called Herber Chapel - was built around 1900, the spatial proximity to the Herb House has no connection with the construction of the chapel. Next to the door is a mission cross from 1861, which was built here in 1912. Inside the chapel there is a cross vault and a triumphal arch.

St. Lambertus Church Laffeld

Highlight • Religious Site

1530 a Hilligenhuisken in Laffeld is mentioned. 1786 construction of a chapel. The ruler, Elector Karl Theodor, provided a certain sum from the taxes on land for their upkeep and also donated a weekly mass in the church.
In 1826 the village built a vicarage - later the vicarage - at its own expense. In 1849, the vicarage was raised to an independent parish church and Peter Josef Jansen was introduced as the first pastor of Laffeld on July 26, the previous chapel was enlarged by an extension according to plans by master builder Habes.
In 1902, the parish council, headed by Pastor Raphael Gonella, decided to rebuild the parish church at another location at the expense of the parish, based on plans by the Düsseldorf architect Prof. Josef Kleesattel. The property required for this was acquired through a land swap. The construction was carried out in the Romanesque style. The inauguration took place in 1904 and the consecration in 1905. The planned construction of a new rectory was dropped because the community was able to purchase a manor house next to the new church and convert it into a rectory. The old chapel was sold to be demolished. During the First World War, the bells, which were only a few years old, had to be delivered. The same happened with the second bell in 1944.
During the Second World War, the church suffered severe damage from shelling, which was repaired by 1956 at the expense of the parish.
In 1953 the third bell for the church was purchased, consisting of three steel bells from the Bochum association. In 2004, the largest of these bells was replaced with a new bronze bell funded by donations. The company Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock in Gescher (Westphalia) received the order for the casting. A bell weighing 1,004 kg with the striking note e' was cast there. However, this cracked after just a few years and had to be recast in 2008 under warranty. The "new" bell now weighed 1,085 kg. The two steel bells weigh 520 and 360 kg and are tuned to the tones g' and a'.

Pilgrimage Church of Ophoven

Highlight • Religious Site

"Pilgrimage Church of St. Maria Himmelfahrt Ophoven
The origin of the Ophoven church goes back to the founding of a Cistercian monastery by Count Otto von Born and his wife Petronella in 1196. The essential part of the three-aisled pillar basilica also dates from this period. In 1571 it was elevated to the status of a parish church. With an extensive renovation in the years 1690 - 1720, the chancel and aisles received their vaults, the tower a side staircase.

In the middle of the 18th century, the rich stucco decoration with the "Eye of God" in the choir and symbols of Mary from the Old Testament in the nave took place: the Ark of the Covenant, the strong Tower of David, the mysterious rose, the Golden House, the Gate of Heaven and the Morning Star .

The carved high altar comes from the Antwerp carving school and was completed in 1520 in the workshop "The Black Hand" by at least 4 carvers. The sign of this workshop can be found on each group of figures. Beginning at the bottom left, it shows the following scenes from the life of the Blessed Mother: Annunciation, meeting of Mary and Elizabeth, presentation in the temple, circumcision of Jesus, infanticide of Bethlehem, flight to Egypt, adoration of the shepherds, death of Mary, adoration of the kings, ascension and coronation of Mary . On the edges of the two main images can be seen in small groups: the seven sacraments, the fall, the expulsion from paradise, the sacrifice of Abraham.

The altar came to Ophoven in 1699 from the Dalheim monastery (mother monastery of Ophoven) as a gift on the occasion of the above-mentioned restorations. The rococo decorations of the carved altar also date from this period.

Pastor Abraham Zohren, who was buried in the church in 1725, played a significant role in this redesign.

To the right of the altar - facing the faithful - is the miraculous image from 1350. It shows Mary as queen with a crown and scepter, holding the kneeling child of God in her left hand. Already in ancient times, many processions went to Ophoven on the Marienoctave, to commend themselves to the protection of the Blessed Mother."
