The origin of the Ophoven church goes back to the founding of a Cistercian monastery by Count Otto von Born and his wife Petronella in 1196. The essential part of the three-aisled pillar basilica also dates from this period. In 1571 it was elevated to the status of a parish church. With an extensive renovation in the years 1690 - 1720, the chancel and aisles received their vaults, the tower a side staircase.
