Binderveld Moated Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle is first mentioned in 1135. Afterwards the castle became dilapidated and it was rebuilt by Hieronymus Van Copis (1635-1653). But the water castle, probably so called because of the ring moat that surrounds the complex, had a turbulent history. In 1636 it was plundered by Croatian troops led by the German Jan, Count von Werth, and in 1637 it was destroyed again, this time by Dutch troops. In 1654, Lorraine troops occupied the castle and in 1728 it burned down completely due to an accident. It was J.B.C. Le Roy, baron van Binderveld, who rebuilt the castle in 1729. We can see this from the date and the coat of arms of Le Roy-Coloba in the facade stone above the door of the living area. It became a semi-closed complex of which the gate tower and the house were preserved. The drawbridge was replaced by a stone bridge in 1865 by the Schrijnmakers family. The chapel had already been replaced in 1842 by the current church of Binderveld.
A few years ago it was transformed into Wijnslot Byrleveldt.

Chapel of the Osseweg

Highlight • Religious Site

This is not the Church of Our Lady in Bos (which also appears several times in the photos - recognizable by the tower and the cemetery) but the Chapel of Our Lady in the hamlet of Ossenweg, near Het Vinne and on the border between Limburg and Flemish Brabant. You can read more about the church of Bos at komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/4964196

The chapel in/of Ossenweg that you find here has existed for a long time: this place of pilgrimage in honor of Mary in Ossenweg has even existed longer than the widely known place of pilgrimage Scherpenheuvel. The chapel dates from 1538 and was gradually expanded. The basilica of Scherpenheuvel was not consecrated until 1627.

You can visit the chapel every day. The interior is L-shaped with the altar at the intersection of the two rooms. Masses are still celebrated here and pilgrims also find their way, with an annual rosary procession among other things. People still come to light candles. I have never been inside without someone passing by for a prayer or a candle.

The interior is also special, as are the buildings next to it. Among the sights: the apostle bench at the back of the chapel with a painted representation of Christ as Salvator from 1613, several seventeenth-century statues and a statue of Mary with her dead son in her lap from the sixteenth century.

The portico altar in the choir is dedicated to Our Lady. In the portico hangs a painting of the Adoration of the Shepherds (Flemish School, ca. 1765, canvas). On the pedestal of the statue of Our Lady of the Ossenweg, an ox and the plough refer to the origin of the chapel.

Sint-Leonardus Church and Belfry Tower

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Leonardus Church in Zoutleeuw is a gem in many respects. High at the top of my wish list is an extensive visit to the inside because this beautiful Gothic church has been left virtually untouched over the years, making it an art museum with a number of unique pieces from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. But the outside is also impressive. Work on the Gothic church probably started around the middle of the thirteenth century. Also special is one of the towers, the St. Barbara's Tower or the belfry of the church, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List with other belfries from Belgium. The church also has the oldest serially cast carillon bells in the world. Art lovers can read the article in a contribution from Public Art Property Flanders, which is not easy to access and which focuses on the many masterpieces: okv.be/artikelen/de-sint-leonarduskerk-zoutleeuw-een -unique masterpiece story - this is really what they call a highlight.

Cloth Hall of Zoutleeuw

Highlight • Historical Site

The elongated building next to the town hall (to the right of the lion on the steps of the town hall in one of the photos) is the former cloth hall. Built after Duke John III had given permission, after his visit to the city around 1316. Used alternately as a bread house (1359), alderman's house (1361), cloth and meat hall (1368 and 1374 respectively) and finally as a guild chamber.
