Escape Route Café Pitlochry

Highlight • Rest Area

Escape Route Cafe is a landmark in the Highland Perthshire cycling landscape, literally and figuratively. Situated in the middle of the region’s main town, close to road and rail links, with a large outdoor undercover seating area and a 100% bike-friendly vibe, it’s arguably the perfect cyclist’s cafe. Complete with drop-bar toilet roll holders in the loos, it doesn’t hurt that there’s a major bike shop of the same name attached either.

This is where they have the “enchanted Forrest” which attracts many many tourists. The woods are lovely and there is a loch there too. Very picturesque.

Queen's View

Highlight • Rest Area

Named after Queen Victoria stopped here in 1866 this viewpoint offers incredible views along Loch Tummel and up to Schiehallion.
It's a busy place in the summer but worth a quick stop anyway and there are toilets and a cafe if you need them.

Loch Tummel

Highlight • Viewpoint

Nice easy road ride along Loch tummel. Beware of the occasional log trucks though. Make sure to have a high psi on tyres so you glide along the tarmac.

Loch Tummel Scenic Road

Highlight • Viewpoint

The B8019 along the northern shore of Loch Tummel is a nice road to ride. It's wide enough and not too busy with a good surface and amazing views. Check out the Queens viewpoint near the eastern end where Queen Victoria stopped to admire the scenery.
The loch has a road all around it so you can do a full circuit, the southern shore road is smaller and a big rougher but absolutely rideable.

Clunie Power Station Entrance Arch

Highlight • Rest Area

Well, it's a bit different you've got to admit. Information boards tell the story. There's car parking through the 'tunnel' and down to the riverside; a useful start and finish point.

Clunie Arch

Highlight • Historical Site

From the Clunie dam , water is led to Clunie generating station through a two-mile long tunnel, horseshoe shaped in cross-section, with an equivalent diameter of 23 ft. A vivid impression of the size of the tunnel, the largest tunnel in Britain at the time, is given by the memorial arch of the same section above the power station. Approximately 400 000 tons of rock had to be excavated in its construction. The contractor was Cementation Co. Ltd.
