The Rondane Mountains between the Gudbrandsdalen and Atndalen valleys
was protected as Norway's first national park in 1962. The goal was to preserve the high mountain ecosystem and secure the habitats of a wild reindeer tribe. In 2003 the protected area was expanded to 963 km2.
