Always well worth a visit. For Buccellato di Lucca head to main square, there is a great bakery just behind the back of the church

St. Michael's Square

Highlight • Religious Site

Also called "the city of a hundred churches", Lucca is one of the most beautiful and loved cities of art in Tuscany. The amphitheater, its walls, the Cathedral of San Martino are just some of the many attractions not to be missed in this city which is located on the Via Francigena and on the Cammino del Volto Santo. The Volto Santo is a large wooden crucifix found inside the cathedral of San Martino.

San Martino Cathedral, Lucca

Highlight • Religious Site

In the left transept of the cathedral, which is well worth seeing, is the famous tomb of Ilaria del Caretto, who died in childbed in 1405 at the age of 19 as the wife of a nobleman from Lucca. The portrait is made of the finest Carrara marble and is unusually realistic. Her female body is clearly visible under the robe, while she just seems to be asleep. A small dog watches over her feet, a sign of marital fidelity.
The wooden relic Volto Santo in the cathedral is also very famous.

Villa Bottini (Lucca)

Highlight • Historical Site

This beautiful urban villa in Lucca (built in the second half of the XVI century by Paolo Buonvisi) takes its name from a noble local family who lived there until the early 1900s.
It has the shape of a parallelepiped surmounted by a lookout lodge. It is located in the center of an elegant garden enclosed by a adorned with Renaissance windows and three portals (the main access portal is located on Via Elisa).
Inside the building, on the ground floor, you can admire the evocative decoration of a cycle of frescoes with mythological and allegorical scenes made by Ventura Salimbeni at the end of the sixteenth century.
It is currently used by the municipality of Lucca, as the seat of the Culture Office.

Church of San Michele Arcangelo

Highlight • Religious Site

Originally founded in 777, the church underwent major renovations in the 12th century. Further changes were made in the 16th century, including raising the height of the medieval church, replacing the wooden roof structure with a vaulted ceiling, and adding a portico to the front facade. The interior of the church is home to several notable works of art, including two paintings from the school of Zacchia il Vecchio and a 14th-century fresco of the Madonna enthroned with two angels. The bell tower, built in 1797, is a beautiful example of the late Baroque style.
