Saint John of Gaztelugatxe

Highlight (Segment) • Historical Site

Although the hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe and its stairway have adorned this spectacular islet since the 10th century, it was not until the place appeared as a setting in the Game of Thrones television series that it gained great popularity. So much so, that it is necessary to get free tickets to access. The ascent to the hermitage consists of 241 steps and although the climb is arduous, it is well worth it. The views of the wild Cantabrian coast and the beauty of the isolate, considered a biotope, with its hermitage on top offer you an unforgettable experience.

Actually have to reserve (it is free) as it can get full and unless you get lucky showing up just as a big tour group cancels you will be turned away
Northern Spain has been on our list as a holiday destination for a long time. Now we are here! Landed on Friday, we explored Bilbao in the rain ☔️ over the weekend, while San Sebastián was sunny in lots of sunshine ☀️.
Today we went to Gastelugatxe, a small rocky island in the Bay of Biscay. A fairly steep descent …

241 steps, rocks, sea, and wind. The magical rocky island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is one of the must-see places on the Basque coast.
The peninsula lies between the two coastal towns of Bakio and Bermeo. It is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge with 241 steps.
The church you see here today is unfortunately not …

We started the hike from the lower parking lot. This is also larger than the upper parking lot. Parking was free, as was entry (May). The tour started on the side path, which is steeper in German than the normal path, but shorter. The view of the island and the way there are a highlight!
Have fun hiking!
