Lake Gräbendorf is located in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district of the state of Brandenburg.
This lake is a remnant of the former Gräbendorf open-cast lignite mine, which operated from 1984 to 1992. The villages of Gräbendorf and Laasdorf were completely destroyed for the mine, while the villages of Reddern and Lassow were partially destroyed.
