Stellingen S-Bahn station, Hamburg

The station was opened here on the Altona-Kaltenkirchen railway in 1912 after the AKN line had been relocated from the edge of Kieler Straße. There had been a Stellingen station there since 1884. The relocation happened because the original route near the road often led to accidents.

The station served both passenger and freight traffic. Freight traffic took place until around 2010 when there was infrequent demand. Since 2012, the tracks have been closed and further dismantled.

The S-Bahn line from Holstenstraße station to Langenfelde had been built since 1958. This section went into service on February 22, 1962. The AKN was taken back accordingly in this course to Langenfelde. The S-Bahn was then extended to Eidelstedt and Elbgaustrasse. In 1960 there were still considerations to set up an additional stop at Volksparkstraße next to the old Stellingen station - this is where today's Stellingen stop is located. In the end, however, only one stop was realized, the old Stellingen station was only used for freight traffic. The section to Elbgaustraße was opened on September 26, 1965, initially as a single track, crossing in Langenfelde. Finally, on May 22, 1966, the new Stellingen S-Bahn station was opened. A third track as a freight track to Haferweg (Diebsteich) remained, as did the tracks near Randstraße.

Since the first introduction of line numbers on the S-Bahn on January 2, 1967, the line running in Stellingen has been called S2.

Today's S-Bahn station has two tracks with a central platform on an embankment.

In Altona's Volkspark, on Sylvesterallee, stands an XXL bronze foot sculpture in front of the Volksparkstadion. It is a 1:20 scale replica of the foot of Uwe Seeler, HSV football idol and honorary citizen of Hamburg.

The foot is enormous, measuring 3.5 meters high x 2.3 meters deep x 5.15 meters wide, and weighs several tons. A must-see and an absolute highlight.
