Along the Oostdijk between the Tonnekreek and Willemstad is 'De Wachter' a special work of art. De Wachter stands exactly on the spot where the storm surge on 1 February 1953 hit and flooded the Ruigenhilpolder. The work of art is an eight-metre-high hill, on which sheep can graze. The work of art De Wachter, by artist Marius Boender, was built along the Hollandsch Diep at the spot where the dike broke during the Flood Disaster in 1953. The reason for the monument was the completion of the dike reinforcement in 2001. The work of art is an eight-metre-high, pyramid-like clay hill, overgrown with grass. You can climb the work of art via a path that winds over the work of art. There is a good chance that you will do so in the company of grazing sheep. Partially new road surface, it rolls absolutely great. Interesting facts about the dam: The Philipsdam is part of the Delta Works. It separates the Krammer and Volkerak waterways from the Oosterschelde and runs between the Grevelingendam and the Sint-Philipsland. In 1976, construction began on a work island on the Plaat van Vliet. After that, the Krammer locks were built for inland shipping. These were completed in 1983 and opened to traffic on February 2, 1987, after the dyke construction work was completed. In 1994, another lock was built for recreational shipping. The locks work with a water exchange system that prevents salt water from the Oosterschelde from flowing into the Volkerak. The heavier salt water is sucked out from below or the fresh water from above, depending on the direction the ships are traveling. The marina is located in the historic center of Middelharnis. The 2.2 kilometer long harbor canal is a popular destination for (water) tourists because of its unique location. The Middelharnis marina is the only municipal marina on Goeree-Overflakkee and has the blue flag. You will find cozy terraces at the renovated harbor basin and the d'n Diek shopping area is within walking distance.
