11월 16, 2024, Jacob's Ladder Stone Steps to Edge Hill

Jacobs Ladder is a flight of stone steps up to Edge Hill. Great views across Warwickshire from the top.

There are great views of 'Compton Pools' from many vantage points along this route. The pools are really lakes as they were turned into a single expanse of water by Lancelot Capability Brown circa 1769. The hills, the house and the bridges provide a beautiful backdrop to the lakes.

"Combroke Village is also known as Combrook and, less frequently, as Combrooke. Its history is closely linked with that of the nearby Compton Verney estate, for which it once served as the estate village, providing living accommodation for a number of the servants. The village dates from at least the time of Henry I, circa 1086, when a small medieval church was built in the village. There is, however, no separate reference to it in the Domesday book. By 1279, following a stocktaking by Edward I known as the Hundred Rolls, Combrook was identified as located in the Kineton hundred. It remained part of the Kineton parish until 1858, when it was separated from Kineton and united with the ecclesiastical parish of Compton Verney. A number of the buildings in the village have a similar style, most easily seen in the church. The original church was modified in Tudor times, with the chancel being rebuilt again in 1831. The present building was erected in 1866, to a design by John Gibson, paid for by the Dowager Lady Margaret Willoughby de Brook of Compton Verney, keeping the existing chancel. John Gibson went on to design the Victorian neo-Elizabethan estate houses and the horse drinking troughs in the village in the same style as that of the church. A number of the other houses in the village are thatched, with clear signs of original thatched roofs visible on several other dwellings. Until the sale of the Compton Verney estate in 1929, Combrook was a "closed" village, entirely owned by the Lord of the Manor, who could determine who lived there, and Combrook today is still considered to be one of the best-preserved estate villages in the country. The largest house in Combrook once served as the school, and there has been a school on the site since at least 1641. The building which now serves as the village hall was built as the village school in 1855, and seems to have served as a design template for John Gibson's style for the church and estate houses. The village school was closed in 1966." Source: Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combrook

"The church of St Mary & St Margaret at Combrook is an entirely 19th century creation but one of considerable charm and eccentricity. Most of it dates from 1866 to the design of John Gibson, though the chancel remains from a simpler structure of 1831. The church is unusual in both it's shape and detailing, from the wide but low-pitched facade to the multi-gabled aisle walls. The west door and bell turret above are adorned with somewhat over-large demi-figures of angels. The stonework attractively blends white stone with rich golden-brown ironstone details. The interior is dark and largely brick-lined with some small stained glass windows by Willement, Powells and Burlison & Grylls." The path is difficult to see on this section of the walk. It is definitely there and hasn't been obliterated by plants and weeds growing on or through it. However, the foliage on either side of the path has grown over it. Extra care needs to be taken as the path is also very narrow where it runs along the edge of the escarpment and it's difficult to identify the edge. One false step and it would be a steep and dangerous tumble down the hill.

Edgehill Castle (Tower) which is now a rather nice pub/restaurant. The castle was built in the 18th Century as a 'sham' castle reputedly on the exact spot where Charles I raised his standard before the Battle of Edgehill during the first English Civil War. Apparently Cromwell got there too late for the battle.

Upton House & Gardens is a National Trust-owned country mansion located in the northern tip of the Cotswolds in Warwickshire. You can catch glimpses of the stunning grounds and building for free, but to enter the house and gardens fully, and to see the impressive art collection that resides inside, you'll have to pay a fee. There is more information about this here https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/warwickshire/upton-house-and-gardens

On the walk you can walk through the farm land, but it will not bring you into the NT grounds. You'll come out through the car park. If you have a NT membership you can stop in, but there is lots to see there too.

Beautiful scenery and well maintained path parts may be slippery in wet weather

Small stream crossing. There hadn’t been much recent rain when we were there so it was fairly easy to cross but perhaps different in winter.

The Battle of Edgehill (or Edge Hill) was a pitched battle of the First English Civil War. It was fought near Edge Hill and Kineton in southern Warwickshire on Sunday, 23 October 1642. All attempts at constitutional compromise between King Charles and Parliament broke down early in 1642. Both the King and Parliament raised large armies to gain their way by force of arms. In October, at his temporary base near Shrewsbury, the King decided to march to London in order to force a decisive confrontation with Parliament's main army, commanded by the Earl of Essex. Late on 22 October, both armies unexpectedly found the enemy to be close by. The next day, the Royalist army descended from Edge Hill to force battle. After the Parliamentarian artillery opened a cannonade, the Royalists attacked. Both armies consisted mostly of inexperienced and sometimes ill-equipped troops. Many men from both sides fled or fell out to loot enemy baggage, and neither army was able to gain a decisive advantage.

Upton House managed by the National Trust is an example of a 1930s country retreat with a wonderful garden designed by Kitty Lloyd-Jones. Café garden and house is open every day from 10:00 - 17:00 although the house closes a little before everything else.

"This obelisk is the most ambitious element in the local sculpture trail. It was constructed to mark the Millennium by the first female apprentice stonemason in the history of Hornton Quarry". The inscription around the top has on one face the letters MM, the year 2000 in Roman numerals. The other three faces bear the names of the villages in the parish: Ratley, Edgehill and Upton.

The house was built on the site of the hamlet of Upton, which was destroyed in about 1500 when the land was cleared for pasture. The estate passed through various hands until the early 16th century when it was bought by Sir William Danvers. It remained with the Danvers family until 1688 when Sir Rushout Cullen purchased the estate for £7,000 (equivalent to £1,270,000 in 2019). Cullen built the house for himself in about 1695. In 1757 the house was bought by banker Francis Child for use as a hunting lodge and it remained in the Jersey family until the end of the 19th century when it was held by George Child Villiers, 5th Earl of Jersey. In 1927 the estate was acquired by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted, who owed his fortune to the fact that his father Marcus Samuel was the founder of the oil company Shell Transport & Trading. His wife Lady Bearsted worked with "Kitty" Lloyd Jones to transform the house's garden during the early 1930s. Kitty would visit and send letters to Lady Bearstead about her gardens. The letters include lists of plants that Lady Bearstead would approve before the gardener, Mr Tidman, planted them. Kitty is credited today with the soft colours and strong colours of the gardens at Upton Houses. She takes particular credit for converting some marshland into the bog garden which she envisaged based around a natural spring in the garden. Lord Bearsted donated the house, gardens and art collection to the National Trust in 1948. Lord Bearsted's son, the 3rd Viscount, lived at Upton from 1948 until his death in 1986 and added to the gift to the National Trust the collection of fine porcelain. On the death of the 3rd Viscount, the furniture and other items on view in the rooms were offered to the nation by his daughter, Hon. Mrs. R. Waley-Cohen, through the "in lieu" system, on condition that they remain at Upton and on view to the public. Mrs. Waley-Cohen continued to live in the house until 1988, when the family moved to another property on the estate. In October 1991, she offered for sale by public auction, a large number of items which were considered surplus to requirements. The sale, by Christie's, took place at the house, in a total of 1083 separate lots, and included pictures, furniture, porcelain, silver, objects and carpets.
