Porta Venezia is one of Milan's historic main gates, opening into the Spanish bastions. It was later redesigned in the Neoclassical era for two new functions: as a customs barrier and as a triumphal entrance to the city. Its original name was Porta Orientale. In Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed, Renzo Tramaglino entered through this very gate to search for Lucia Mondella.

Porta Venezia, formerly called Porta Orientale (it was renamed in the 18th century, during Austrian rule), was one of the eight toll gates, but above all one of the triumphal entrances to Milan. Its toll gates, which separate Corso Venezia from Corso Buenos Aires, were built in 1828 by Rodolfo Vantini, an architect who won a competition to replace the two previous toll gates, deemed too humble and left unfinished. Vantini constructed two parallelepiped-shaped buildings, open on three sides with porticoes with Doric columns; he adorned them with sculptures by artists.
