3월 5, 2025, Ciastel Fischburg
On the left side of the Val Gardena stream, between Selva and St. Christina, the Fischburg (Ladin Ciastel de Gherdëina) stands enthroned, surrounded by numerous fish ponds, which gave the castle its name. The castle was built between 1622 and 1641 by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg as a summer residence and hunting lodge, even though the monumental building exudes medieval defensiveness. The castle was equipped more with hunting weapons than with military weapons. Fishing equipment was also found - obvious, considering the nearby fish ponds. At the end of the 18th century, the castle gradually fell into disrepair, and in 1826 part of the inventory was auctioned off. In the middle of the 19th century, Count Leopold von Wolkenstein-Trostburg donated the Fischburg to the municipality of St. Christina, which wanted to build a home for the elderly and the poor here. In 1926, the castle was sold to Baron Carlo Franchetti from Venice, who renovated the castle inside and out and equipped it with furnishings purchased in South Tyrol and Val Gardena. The castle is still owned by this Venetian family today and is not accessible. https://www.valgardena-groeden.com/de/highlights/burgen-schloesser/fischburg/

The ruins of the early medieval castle are located in the middle of the forest at the foot of the Sciliar massif. The castle belonged to the poet Oswald von Wolkenstein and looks back on an eventful history. From here there are extensive views over the high plateau of Siusi and Castelrotto and the winding remains of the wall invite you to explore and linger.

Definitely run, especially with children! I would take bus 15 (free with a guest card) to Bad Ratzes and then walk comfortably down to Salegg. Very pleasant even in midsummer (partial shade), and also very entertaining thanks to the many great information cards. The terrain is undemanding, but not for strollers. Stop at Pizzeria Salegg (great pizza, not much crowd, closed between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.) and then get on the bus. Stop directly below the pizzeria.

The building was erected in the 12th century by the lords of Hauenstein and underwent successive enlargements in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was owned for a third by the fourteenth-century Tyrolean poet Oswald von Wolkenstein, who established his residence there for a few years and composed some of his Lieder. The baron Christoph von Wolkenstein bought the castle in 1551aio 1551 but with time his heirs did not care and this fell into ruin as early as the seventeenth century. of the castle were restored and some frescoes were recovered inside the chapel.

The Fischburg was built between 1622 and 1641 by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg as a summer residence and hunting lodge. The castle has got its name from the numerous fish fisheries in its vicinity. In winter it can only be reached from St. Cristina. The alternative hiking trail from Selva ends at the Sasslong ski slope. The castle is privately owned and can not be visited inside.

This is a short detour from the Oswald-Von-Wolkenstein-Weg. Hidden under a thick rock is a small area with seating (for children) and a thick book with short stories and legends from the area to read aloud.
