The Legend of the Cross: Once upon a time there was a very aggressive wolf who lived on the Rocca di Manerba. The wolf was terrifying and no one dared come near him. Countless attempts have been made to capture the wolf but all in vain. At one point a price was put on the wolf's head. At that time, the people subsisted on agriculture and sheep breeding, so news of the financial reward for the capture of the wolf soon spread across the area. Three young men from Moniga, Raffa and Pieve Vecchia, were willing to take up the challenge. The first two brave men tried to catch the wolf with live bait and then with a large fishing net, but in both cases the enemy caught them. The two young men were driven off the cliff and fell into the water of the lake. At that point, two huge rocks rise out of the water, commemorating the sacrifice of the two challengers. The third candidate, a young farmer from the nearby village of Pieve Vecchia, took courage and climbed to the top of the cliff where the wolf inhabited a den overlooking the lake. During the ensuing fight, the young man protected himself with a large cross that he used as a shield. This cross is said to have scared the wolf so much that it kept recoiling until it fell off the cliff too and died. Today there is a large cross on the top (which is very nicely lit at night), in honor of that young man from Pieve Vecchia who gave the beautiful promontory back to the people of Manerba.

Rocca di Manerba is the name of what is probably the most striking rock on the southwestern Lake Garda. Minerva gave the name to the rock that plunged vertically into the lake, because the goddess had her temple here in Roman times. However, the Romans were not the first to pay homage to this divine spot. Finds show that people took possession of this place as early as 7,000 to 10,000 years ago. Later, the Venetians built a castle on the foundations of the temple, which, after the sovereigns had left, was also used as a fortress by robbers due to its strategic location. Today beautiful nature walks lead through the park above the steep cliffs. The view of the islands of San Biagio and Isola del Garda in front of the majestic mountain backdrop of the northern lake is breathtaking. The archaeological finds of the Rocca have been brought together in a small museum, which gives its visitors an overview of both the history and the special natural treasures of the Rocca di Manerba. Immediately in front of the museum (follow the signs to “Parco Archeologico”) there is a parking lot, from which you can easily walk to the castle ruins on the top of the rock.
