Of the five gates that once provided access to the town, Porta Romana and Porta Parma remain on the opposite side. We are on the ancient Via Romea, and today's Via Mazzini is a vestige of it. Its current appearance, clad in white Carrara marble, dates back to 1783; on the exterior is the coat of arms of Genoa and, higher up, a statue of Mary.

Porta Romana is one of the historic entrances to the center of Sarzana, dating back to the 15th century, once an entry point along the Via Francigena. It preserves the city's identity and is a symbol of continuity between past and present.

The beautiful and imposing marble monument, carved from white Carrara marble from the Apuan Alps, dates back to 1914. It is dedicated to the legendary Giuseppe Garibaldi and is the work of the sculptor and artist Carlo Fontana. Overlooking Piazza Garibaldi (namesake of the great hero of two worlds), founded in the 19th century, is the Impavidi Theatre, built on the initiative of a group of private citizens of Sarzana, on an area previously occupied by the church and the Dominican Convent. The theatre was inaugurated in 1809 and is among the oldest historic theatres in the Liguria region. (c) https://share.google/BfaHC76OuiZolWCMB

A very easy and pleasant ride. Much of the route follows secondary roads with very little traffic. Splendid views of Fosdinovo Castle, the mouth of the Magra River, and the Bay of La Spezia.

Fosdinovo is located in the Lower Magra Valley, north of the Luni plain, on the border between Tuscany and Liguria. It probably owes its name to "Faucenova", new mouth, a probable reference to a new road that opened from the sea towards the interior. The village is a small treasure chest of art, always a gateway to the historic region of Lunigiana, among its streets you can perceive the air of the border: you can smell the sea, you can breathe the mountains. Since 2014 Fosdinovo, with its perfectly preserved castle-fortress, has been one of the Orange Flag villages of the Italian Touring Club. The undisputed symbol of Fosdinovo is the beautiful Malaspina Castle, which stands on top of the mountain and the town, establishing itself as one of the most beautiful and best preserved fortresses in Lunigiana

In the center of the village, the Malaspina castle stands out in all its grandeur: towers of different sizes, shapes and heights joined to the central palace form a whole where the military function coexists with the residential one. Low houses outline a sort of wall on the perimeter of that “verrucula” (small wart) that rises between the Mommio stream and the Collegnago canal; a real dive into the Middle Ages. Verrucola was embellished by the sculptor and painter Pietro Cascella with some works, especially fountains, placed to decorate the town at the end of a skillful restoration.

The genius of descent, by Carlo Fontana, located on the south side of Piazza Garibaldi. Wrongly known as the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, Fontana's monument, designed in 1907 and completed in 1914, was actually intended to symbolize the future of the Italian people with the protection of Garibaldi, a key figure and one of the most important figures of the Risorgimento and the unification of Italy. The statue, which represents a giant with a shield on which is the profile of the Man of the Two Worlds, was carved from a single block of white Carrara marble which, after being built in the quarries, was transported to Sarzana by a large number of oxen and placed on the base with special equipment.
