Art and irony will surprise you suddenly during your walk in the center of Levanto. At the corner of Via Garibaldi with Via Vinzoni, look up at the frontispiece of the first building and you will see a series of curious frescoes that have become famous as “The Grotesques.” They are caricatured portraits dating back to the sixteenth century, whose author is unknown. They represent one of the few surviving testimonies in Liguria of a type of decoration, probably of Lombard origin, that was once very widespread. The bizarre poses of the characters depicted, very different from the elegant ones of official portraits, are fun photographic subjects.
