The Danish army had already begun a retreat from the Danevirke fortifications on the evening of February 5, 1864, during a snowstorm, which was perceived by the Prussian-Austrian army command as a troop movement.[2][3] On the morning of February 6, 1864, the Prussian troops under Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia succeeded in crossing the Schlei near Arnis, as the Danes had expected, and thus bypassed the Danevirke position. Lake Sankelmarker is just a few kilometers south of Flensburg. A visitor platform was built here on a hill that gives you a wonderful view over the water. A board informs you about how the lake was once formed.
