The functions of Lake Altmühl in Bavaria are diverse: It serves to regulate water management, as a temporary reservoir for the Danube-Main system, to raise the Altmühl's low water levels, and for flood protection. At the same time, it is an important destination for tourism and recreation, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and cycling, as well as an important sanctuary for waterfowl, particularly the "Bird Island" in the north of the lake. The cycle path around the lake is largely separated from pedestrians. Almost 100% paved. There are three lake centers with numerous restaurants.

The medicinal plant garden of the doctor and botanist Leonhart Fuchs (1501-1566) on the edge of the Hofgarten is one of the first botanical gardens of the university and one of the oldest in the world.[2] Emperor Charles V elevated him to the nobility.
