8월 1, 2025, Landgoed Schovenhorst Arboretum
A very interesting arboretum, a great starting point for walks. There are nice restaurants and cafes nearby. The small museum "De 10 Malen" next door is definitely worth a visit.

A completely new work of art has recently been delivered as additional information about the centre of the Netherlands. This is a scale replica of a map of the Netherlands in steel.

5월 6, 2024, Burial Mound in Veluwe
You will find several burial mounds in the area, including this one. The burial mounds are actually a bit similar to our gravestones. Larger burial mounds often indicate a family grave or the grave of an important person. Did you know that from the objects found in the graves we have learned a lot about how the earliest inhabitants of this region must have lived?

The center of gravity of the mainland area of the Netherlands. In 1984, geologist Frank Storbeck calculated that the center of gravity was in Putten. He digitized the edges of the Netherlands and the inland waterways and calculated the center of gravity of the mainland using the computer. Storbeck did this on behalf of the theater maker Harrie Hageman, who had set himself the goal of organizing a funny happening about the discovery of the center of gravity in the Netherlands. [1]Hageman had an iron ring anchored to a boulder in the ground at the calculated location. This monument was unveiled with the words “Lift the Netherlands by this ring and no one will notice.” The ring with stone was lifted and kidnapped in 2007 as part of a New Year's Eve stunt. Kadaster recalculated the point for an episode of the television show Het Klokhuis in 2016. They then arrived at a location in the municipality of Ermelo. [2]But this was mainly because this calculation also included land that dries up at low tide. The found center then shifts through the Wadden Sea in the north. If you calculate the center based on the high water mark, you get to about 2 km from the top of Storbeck. The difference can be partly explained by calculation uncertainties, as Storbeck calculated it partly manually, but the exact location found also depends on the definitions used, boundary changes and coastline changes. Made by Theo Borger and André van Beek from Putten. They have now also made a group of 3 monks and a fox. A little further in the forest (spot the highlight).

According to folk tales, there used to be a monastery here, where dark practices took place... The abbot and the monks who lived in the beautiful monastery did not take the pious life very seriously. They drank gallons of wine, gorged themselves during meals and organized meetings with witches and ghosts. Together they danced until it became light again. This went on for a long time. The monks partied, drank and enjoyed life. Until, sometime in the Middle Ages, a stormy Christmas evening put an end to the wicked excesses in the forest. Suddenly, local residents heard a huge lightning strike. The next morning a little boy passed by the site and discovered that the entire monastery had disappeared into a large hole in the forest. All that could be seen were some uprooted trees around the site, the brick path that was the access road and a deep hole.

The legend of the Solse Gat The Solse Gat is a mysterious place in the middle of the Veluwe. In the old forests near Drie there is a large hole in the middle of the forest, the Solse Gat. Geologically speaking, the Solse Gat is a relic from the Ice Age. The name probably came about because the Germans used it as a place of worship for their sun god Sol. The most exciting story is the legend of the sunken monastery: According to legend, where this hole is today there was a large monastery with many towers. This was an ugly, dark place; the chief and all the monks had sold their souls to the devil. In the middle of the night a black mass was held with all the witches and ghosts from the area. The villagers heard the most terrible noises. This lasted until a stormy Christmas night centuries ago. The monastery disappeared into the ground with a huge clap of thunder. All that remained was a gruesome pit. Since then, if you listen carefully, you can hear the monastery bells ringing hoarsely around midnight. Some even see a blue glow rising from the hole. Fortunately, when the sun rises, it seems as if nothing has happened. The dancing trees together with the Solse Gat form a beautiful picture. You can sit on the benches at the Solse Gat and ponder all the exciting stories. Sources:ermelobuitenleven.nl/verhalen/de-legende-van-het-solse-gat beleven.org/verhaal/de_legende_van_het_solse_gat

Almost drove past it and discovered it at the last moment. Someone really took the trouble to carve this Medusa head out of a large root. Very great idea 👍🏻

You will find this impressive wooden Medusa right next to the bike path. A beautiful wooden work of art carved from a tree stump of a snake's head. There is also a bench and a table to sit and enjoy.
