These are old peat pits. Peat was once extracted here as fuel.

This moor lake is located in the Ribnitz Great Moor, a rain-fed bog, meaning it is fed solely by precipitation, which is "held" by the moss. The moss grows as a result, bulges up, forms peat, and grows... if it isn't drained. Here, too, peat was dug and the bog drained. The pond was also "created" in this way. Today, a worthwhile excursion trail leads through it, with information boards and benches.
