The sign of a Cistercian monastery are the fish ponds - that's why they also existed in Bad Doberan. The ponds are very beautifully laid out.

The monastery ponds date back to the 13th century, when Cistercian monks from Doberan Monastery found the best conditions for building fish ponds here. They built the ponds step by step in a chain, and they were used until the 16th century. Today they are protected. With a bit of luck, you can see fire-bellied toads here. This population is one of the largest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
