This is a site that was inhabited by people thousands of years ago, as can be proven by archaeological finds. Visitors of our modern times are invited to stay at least for a short time. Some will certainly be happy to take advantage of the opportunity offered here after the climb.

A lovely place to linger and, in the past, to stop for a drink. Unfortunately, the mill is now closed and the mill wheel is no longer in use because Aunt Gertrud died. God rest her soul. Hopefully she is in a better world now...

It's a shame that the restaurant is closed. It was always a nice opportunity to have a cheap drink after the gorge. I missed it yesterday. Unfortunately, the mill ditch to the mill wheel was also closed. I always liked to turn the mill wheel for a short time.

Charcoal burning is an ancient craft that is now almost extinct, but in the past it was a decisive factor in the industrialization of entire regions: the blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, depended on charcoal to reach the operating temperature necessary for melting ore. As a result, entire regions were once completely deforested by charcoal burning, and it is only thanks to later reforestation that forests have grown again and nature can be seen.

After successfully converting a dilapidated construction trailer into a spacious charcoal burner's wagon in 2011, we are now starting the charcoal burner's hut project. The location and appearance were decided after intensive consideration by the association, the forestry office and the town of Boppard. It will serve as a catering room for us on charcoal burner days. On the other 355 days of the year, the extra rustic building is available as a resting place for hikers on the "Middle Rhine Via Ferrata" dream loop, the Rhine Castles hiking trail and the Saar-Hunsrück Climb.
