Only narrow dunes separate it from the Baltic Sea. A breach allows the salt water of the Baltic Sea to mix with its fresh water, which it is fed by streams that originate in the Kühlung. When there is a storm from the northwest and especially the northeast, it and some of the neighboring pastures and meadows are flooded with Baltic Sea water. The mixture of fresh and salt water, also known as brackish water, determines the fauna and flora of the unique nature reserve, which is partially fenced off for protection. The special feature of the quiet village of Kägsdorf is its fine, sandy, pristine beach in the heart of the Rieden nature reserve, which is exempt from tourist tax year-round.
