The Heiligensee and Hüttelmoor nature reserve is located in the eastern part of the Rostock urban area, south-west of Graal-Müritz. The Hüttelmoor forms the largest part of the nature reserve in terms of area; the Heiligensee is located north of the moor. The legal determination of the 540-hectare area took place in 1957. The protective purpose is the development of a severely degraded coastal floodplain as part of the Rostock Heath. The north-west border is formed by the Baltic Sea dyke. From 1975 the use of grassland was intensified without regard to the status as a nature reserve. The areas were drained by a pumping station, the grassland was broken up and grasses were sown. Attempts have been made since 1990 to reverse these interventions and to cultivate the areas in accordance with the requirements of nature conservation-friendly grassland use
