Kampen is by far the most snobbish place on the island. While the houses are mostly thatched and built in the Frisian style, they are mostly not old. Much of Kampen has a "slicked-down" feel and therefore lacks a sense of authenticity. From Kampen, it's just a stone's throw to the "Red Cliff," a must-see. The beautiful lighthouse, "Long Christian," is also within walking distance from Kampen. Incidentally, this lighthouse was painted yellow-gray until 1953 and was commissioned by the Danish king in the 19th century. Sylt was, in fact, Danish property at the time, after the then imperialist Denmark had occupied large parts of Schleswig-Holstein.

The area around List is home to Schleswig-Holstein's oldest nature reserve, established in 1923 and a bird paradise. In 1980, the reserve was expanded to its current size. I love Sylt and have known this island since childhood. It is truly a gem, with a distinct beauty in many places, including the old Frisian houses. What you should beware of on Sylt: the stupid and mostly clumsy chic crowd. But anyone who knows Sylt knows how to avoid them.

Beautiful bike ride from Westerland to Kampen Lighthouse, Uwe Dune, Red Cliff, and the Cross-Marker Lighthouse Tower. Very worthwhile. Mostly flat.
