The Billetal nature reserve is located on the western edge of the Sachsenwald forest. Numerous, truly idyllic hiking trails meander along the river, which is cool even in summer. The Bille provides a habitat for brown trout and grayling. Surrounded by alluvial forests, wet meadows and tall herbaceous meadows, the area is home to numerous plant and animal species. The old beech forests along the valley slopes are particularly beautiful.

The Schwarze Au is dammed up here to form the mill pond. The first mill was the grain mill on the mill pond just before the river flows into the Bille. It was first mentioned in a document in 1350 in a messenger invoice from the Hamburg treasury. It was a compulsory mill for 13 surrounding villages until the introduction of freedom of trade. In 1650, the Auemühle brewery is attached to the mill and licensing rights are granted. 1681 Construction of a sawmill "not far from the place where the awe flows into the bille". The Hahnheide is a beautiful nature reserve of approximately 1,500 hectares near Trittau in the Stormarn Switzerland region. Here you'll find wonderful stands of old-growth pines, beeches, and spruces. The forest is dominated by the "Lange Otto" (Long Otto). From this observation tower, you have an impressive view over the Stormarn Switzerland region. The 27-meter-high tower stands atop the 99-meter-high "Großer Hahnheider Berg" (Great Hahnheide Hill). On a clear day, you can even spot the Hamburg TV tower in the distance. The Langer Otto has been a very attractive observation tower for decades – it was originally built in 1974 and rebuilt in 2001 to its current height of 27 meters. I've known it since the late 1970s and always enjoy coming back – the view is fantastic.
