In 1945, the building burned down as a result of the war. The choir and nave were rebuilt starting in the 1950s.

The town church of St. Jacobi in Prenzlau dates from the middle of the 13th century. Several additions were made up to the 16th century, including the north chapel and the southern vestibule. In 1757 the upper floor of the tower was rebuilt and given a baroque wooden spire. Today the Dominican monastery is a cultural site and houses a museum From the website of the city of Prenzlau: Lavishly restored at the end of the 1990s, the sacred building is now one of the best-preserved medieval monastery complexes in north-eastern Germany.
