The church was built as part of the expansion of the castle complex under Duke (later Grand Duke) Carl II of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1741–1816). Hohenzieritz Castle served him as a summer residence and was developed into a prestigious estate from the 1770s onwards, including an English landscape park (one of the oldest on the continent).

The village was first documented in 1170 (as "Cyrice") and was originally a fief of various noble families. It changed hands several times, including families such as von Peccatel, von Blankenburg, von Holtzendorff, and von Fabian.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prillwitz is a remarkable example of regional architectural history. The original nave dates back to the Middle Ages, while in the 18th century a half-timbered church was built, presumably on the foundations of the previous building. At the end of the 19th century, the church received a new tower in the Neo-Gothic style, the half-timbered walls were replaced with masonry, and the exterior plastering was renewed. The interior is simple, with a late Gothic pulpit and an altar from the early 16th century. The organ was built by Barnim Grüneberg in 1892 and restored in 2014, making it an important instrument in the region. Prillwitz is picturesquely situated in the Tollense Basin of the Mecklenburg Lake District.

The park offers numerous views, vistas, and benches. It's an oasis of tranquility in nature, surrounded by gnarled trees and abundant greenery. In severe weather conditions, such as storms or strong winds, the park may be temporarily closed.

The village church, which is essentially Gothic, was supplemented with a neo-Gothic tower in 1894.

The Catholic chapel was donated by the owner of the hunting lodge and built in 2011 from clinker bricks reclaimed from over 100 years of history. It is open to visitors during the day.
