Katinger Watt The Katinger Watt is a bird sanctuary covered with meadows and forests at the mouth of the Eider river. In the early 1970s, the area was dammed and thus protected from storm surges. The Katinger Watt now offers a unique habitat for plants and animals. Walking paths invite you to hike and experience nature.

The Tönninger Packhaus was built in 1783 - at the same time as the completion of the Eider Canal, which connected the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. At the time it was one of the largest storage buildings on the coast. The port of Tönning gained particular importance with the blockade of the Elbe by the British at the time of Napoleon. Since Tönning was in neutral Denmark at the time, many goods were handled via Tönning and then transported on overland. With the construction of the later Kiel Canal by Kaiser Wilhelm, Tönning lost its position as a trading port. Only the fishermen still docked in Tönning Hafen. With the construction of the Eider barrage in 1972, the fish and shrimp cutters were relocated to the port there.
