Like the inland port of Husum, the Tönning harbor is tide-dependent and dries out at low tide. In the small fishermen's houses on the harbor pier you will find a wide range of restaurants.

Beautiful little town on the Eider, where you should definitely keep, if you make a bike ride through this region. A beautiful marketplace with the church is just as worth seeing as the harbor area. It's great to sit in one of the small bars and enjoy the surroundings with good food or just a refreshment.

Tönning (Danish: Tønning) is a town at the entrance to the Eiderstedt peninsula in North Frisia. The town at the mouth of the Eider is made up of the districts of Tönning, Olversum, Groß-Olversum and Kating. The urban area includes the Katinger Watt nature reserve, which was created through the construction of the Eider Barrier, and contains the only larger forest area in the Schleswig-Holstein marsh.

You can experience harbor flair on the Eider in Tönning. After all, the city was a very important port and trading center until the construction of the NOK in 1895, as the westernmost connection between the North and Baltic Seas, via the Eider Canal.
The packing house and the pretty harbor as well as the beautiful old town with many small gabled and town houses characterize Tönning. The Multimar Wattforum adventure exhibition is also worthwhile.
The most important building on the market - the St. Lawrence Church - rises 62 meters high above the city. The oldest fragments date from the 12th century. An impressive ceiling painting, a baptismal font and a pulpit with carvings are worth seeing.
At 77 m, the brick building, the Tönninger Packhaus from 1783, is the most impressive building that houses an exhibition on the history of Tönning. The market square is the ideal starting point for a stroll to the harbor. Past the castle gardens to the harbor promenade, which is lined with trees. Interesting buildings including the white wooden drawbridge with mostly photos :-) and the boatman's house from 1625.
The Katinger Watt is also part of the urban area. The NSG was created through the construction of the Eider Barrier and is now particularly interesting for bird lovers.

For centuries the Eider was also the border between Schleswig and Holstein between the Holy Roman Empire and Denmark. Tönning was a Danish border town for a very long time, even though this was until the 18th / 19th century. Played only a minor role in the 16th century, as the transnational and changing rule of the Danish king and various noble houses of Schleswig-Holstein were of far greater importance.

To the urban area belongs the Natura 2000 area Katinger Watt, which was created by the construction of the Eider barrier. In Katinger Watt is a 495 hectare large forest. It is the only larger forest area of the Schleswig-Holstein march.
