Since the museum is currently being rebuilt on the other side of the street, I doubt that the cannons will also be relocated - as of May 2025, they are no longer here.

A section of the 26-kilometer-long Danevirke, known locally as the Margarethenwall, runs through the municipality of Ellingstedt. The Danevirke is the largest fortification of the Viking Age and at the same time the largest fortification and the largest archaeological monument in Northern Europe.

The Waldemar Wall represents the most important expansion phase of the Danevirke. In the second half of the 12th century AD, the Danish King Waldemar I (*1131 – †1182) had the main wall of the Danevirke reinforced with a brick wall. These were a new building material in Northern Europe. Waldemar wanted to protect the Danish Empire from raids by the Slavs and Saxons and at the same time demonstrate foreign policy strength. The wall is the largest and oldest secular building made of bricks in Northern Europe and can now be visited as a ruin over a length of 80 meters. Here the blades of grass grow in nature, about 40 cm high 😀. In spring, the reconstructed fortification, Schanze 14, certainly looks more impressive.

The Danewerk Museum is currently housed in containers, but the sanitary facilities were very good. If you fancy playing mini golf with the Vikings, this is also the place for you.

The new museum building is not due to be completed until 2026. Until then, some exhibits will be on display in containers. There isn't really much to see, but the information boards are interesting. Only costs 2 euros per adult. Behind the containers - how exotic - is a very pretty mini golf course.
