Here, where the Mühlengraben flows into the Störkanal, the Waldlewitz River begins on the opposite side. The Gaartz Bridge, built in 2003, is only accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Until 1989, a bascule bridge stood at this location, which had to be operated by boatmen using a hand winch. A view from the bridge over the Störkanal in both directions is a real treat! From the Gaartz Bridge, you have three options for continuing your exploration of the Waldlewitz: Cross the bridge and follow the forest paths to Göhren or Tramm (approx. 5 km). If you turn right, you will reach the tranquil Lewitz village of Jamel in approximately 4.5 km. If you follow the unpaved path along the Störkanal, you will reach the Breiter Graben after about 2 km. Here, turn right and after another 2 km you will reach the Friedrichsmoor hunting lodge, built in 1791. In summer, it's especially pleasant to linger in the castle courtyard and enjoy the house's specialties. The path is natural.

Crossing the bridge is no problem even for e-bikes as there are rails for pushing on the side of the stairs.

The Jagdschloss is an ideal starting point for hikes. Events such as the wood festival or the pottery market invite you again and again. And we also take care of your physical well-being (it is best to research the opening times on the internet in advance...)

It's good that there's a bridge here at all to cross the Störkanal. However, a better solution than stairs could have been found for the many cyclists here. Unfortunately, there is no other obvious alternative. You can find more detailed information about the Gaartzer Bridge here: https://www.gemeinde-banzkow.de/images/bilder/bilder/banzkow/gaartzerbrucke/GaartzerBrcke.pdf

The French scene wallpaper from 1815 in the garden hall is particularly impressive. It depicts a courtly red deer hunt in 5 scenes. Noteworthy are the red hunting coats from Napoleon's time, which were banned after his fall in 1815. Since 2004, after restoration, the wallpaper has been in the garden room of the Jagdschloss.

Gaarzer Bridge over the Stör Canal: As early as 1837 there was a bridge here that served as the shortest land connection between Jamel and Bahlenhüschen. Today's pedestrian and cyclist bridge was rebuilt and opened in 2003.

Very nice castle with a castle museum and a recommendable restaurant. Ideal for a longer break. You can also sit on a terrace with a view of a park or in the castle courtyard

Very nice route along the canal. Without the bridge, crossing the canal would involve major detours.

Be careful when crossing the bridge with the e-bike. Switch on the pushing aid, if available and always keep the brakes on on the downhill stretch.

8월 23, 2021, Garwitz Lock
The Garwitz lock is one of 17 locks on the Müritz-Elde waterway and, like all others, serves to overcome the height difference between the Elbe and Plauer See. The lock has sloping walls. This creates a deceptive width of almost 8 meters at the headwater. However, this must not be fully used under any circumstances, otherwise there is a risk of shipwreck when being smuggled down. The usable width there is only 6.60 meters. In addition, it should be noted that the road bridge is located directly above the lock. Mooring directly below the bridge when sluicing up can be life-threatening, as you will be trapped under the bridge with the boat. So far, no accidents in the lock due to the difficult conditions have become known. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schleuse_Garwitz

Friedrichsmoor Hunting Lodge is located in the heart of the "Lewitz" nature reserve, which today is characterized by forests, meadows, ditches, and ponds. A perfectly straight path leads directly from the Ludwigslust Palace. In this area rich in forests and wildlife, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm had a hunting lodge built around 1705. The single-story, three-winged, half-timbered hunting lodge was built according to a design by the court architect von Seydewitz, and the complex was completed in 1791 under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Since 1964, a wallpaper depicting "La chasse à Compiègne" (The Hunt in Compiègne), originally installed in Friedrichsthal Palace, has been on display in the palace's garden hall. It was created around 1815 based on designs by the French painter Charles Vernet. The hunting lodge was used as such until 1918. After 1945, it served various purposes, including as a youth camp for the German Free Democratic Party (FDJ) and land improvement. Since 2000, the Stang family has run the hunting lodge as a hotel and restaurant. There was also a small horse breeding facility with Arabians and Lewitzsches horses on the grounds. https://gutshaeuser.de/de/schloesser/jagdschloss_friedrichsmoor

The castle has had various uses during its almost 800-year history. Until the 18th century it served as the residence and administrative center of the Mecklenburg dukes. During the 30 Years War, Wallenstein stayed in the castle for 3 days. The ironworks located in the city allowed him to produce iron military equipment. With the completion of the nearby castle in 1717, the castle lost its character as a ruler's seat. The Duke's former living quarters became a stables and remained as part of the Redefin State Stud until 1954. The former farm building also had various uses, including serving as an orangery, living room, school, technical college and youth hostel. After extensive renovation of the entire castle complex, which was completed in 2006, the castle now houses the museum, a wedding room, the city information center and the restaurant. Guided tours and events accompany the year. No other medieval castle in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is as well preserved. http://www.burg-neustadt-glewe.de/museum-historie.html
