                Even in the 19th century, when shipping and maritime trade were experiencing their last heyday, there were several wooden shipyards in Greifswald on the northern bank of the Ryck, where sea-going ships were also built. However, most of these businesses did not survive the decline of sailing shipping towards the end of the century. In the long term, only the wooden boat yard run by the boat builder Richard Buchholz on Salinenstrasse since 1911 was able to hold its own, albeit initially only on a modest scale.
                During the Second World War, dinghies for the Navy and other smaller Navy vessels were built and repaired at the shipyard. After the war, Richard Buchholz was imprisoned in the Soviet Fiveeichen internment camp near Neubrandenburg, where he died in February 1947. Regardless of this, the boatyard, which was still run as a private company by Willi Buchholz, experienced a considerable upswing in the first post-war years. The demands placed on East German steel shipbuilding by Soviet reparation demands, the establishment of a state-owned fishing industry and the availability of local raw materials (wood) were the framework conditions for a large-scale wooden cutter building program, which also ensured full order books at the Buchholz shipyard.
                After the shipyard owner fled to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1953, the Buchholz shipyard became the VEB boat and repair shipyard in Greifswald. The company remained the largest repair yard in the Saßnitz cutter fleet. In addition, some special ships were built for the technical fleet and some passenger ship conversions were completed at the beginning of the 1970s. With the introduction of the free market economy in 1990, shipyard operations ceased. Initially, the Greifswald Museum Harbor Association tried to preserve the former Buchholz shipyard as a technical monument to the history of hand-crafted wooden shipbuilding and thus a chapter in the economic and social history of the old Hanseatic city of Greifswald. The entire shipyard has been one of Greifswald's monuments since the late 1990s.
