This palace, which despite its "youth" (it was built during the 19th century) is one of the most beautiful in Europe, stands on an unparalleled natural environment, that of the Sintra Mountains, and is surrounded by a botanical garden in which thousands of species from all corners of the planet coexist.

The Jerónimos Monastery, located in the Belém district, is a jewel of Manueline architecture and one of Lisbon's most visited monuments. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Built by order of King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama's voyage to India, its construction began in 1501–1502 on the site where Vasco da Gama and his crew prayed before setting sail. For centuries it was occupied by the Order of Saint Jerome, hence its name.

The Monument to the Discoveries, popularly known as Padrão dos Descobrimentos, is a monument built in 1960, on the banks of the Tagus River, in Belém, Lisbon, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.
