The castle of Torres Vedras is an important part of Portuguese history. It was a strategic point in the fight against the Moors and later against Napoleon. The castle was conquered in 1147 by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal.

The Portuguese Pavilion at the 1998 World's Fair (Expo'98), begun in 1995 and completed in 1998, housed the Portuguese national representation at that event and remains in operation to this day. The Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila, is one of Portugal's most iconic monuments and the oldest royal palace in the country.
