Holger Danske Statue – A Monument to Danish Legends The Holger Danske Statue in Faaborg-Midtfyn is a silent yet powerful symbol of Danish mythology. Holger Danske, also known as Ogier the Dane, is a legendary hero who, according to legend, rests in an underground sleep and awakens when Denmark is in danger. The statue commemorates this mythical guardian and lends the place a special cultural depth. It is a popular hiking highlight, embedded in several easy circular routes through Faaborg. A beautiful gable painting by Els Cools, Oliver Streich, and Bruno MacDonald on the gable of the "Director's" building on the old slaughterhouse site. The painting depicts a man watering the city's landmark, the bell tower. There are eight bell towers in total, all of different sizes and all planted in a flowerpot. Four of the small bell towers are sculptures made of cement, which were then painted in the colors of the bell tower. Faaborg Church is part of an old monastery complex, built from 1477 onwards and now demolished. The Church of the Holy Spirit was named after the monastic order that also built it. Compared to the size of the town, the church is very impressive: It is 46 meters long, 19 meters wide in the nave, and 8 meters wide in the chancel.
