As part of the reactivation of the Heidekrautbahn main line to Berlin-Wilhelmsruh, the old stations along the line are also being awakened from their slumber. One of these is Blankenfelde station, located on the edge of the district of the same name, which has retained its village character despite its location within Berlin. The construction of a 140-meter-long, barrier-free platform is planned here. The Heidekrautbahn opened in 1901; the line got its name from the fact that many day-trippers from Berlin took the train to Groß Schönebeck, the "Gateway to the Schorfheide." After the division of Germany, an alternative route to the main line to Wilhelmsruh was created between Schönwalde and Berlin-Karow in 1950. With the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the line between Berlin-Blankenfelde and Berlin-Wilhelmsruh was no longer served. A small number of trains arriving from the north terminated at Blankenfelde station, while the majority were diverted via the alternative route to Berlin-Karow. In 1983, passenger service was also discontinued between the Schönwalde junction and Berlin-Rosenthal. The reactivation of the historic Heidekrautbahn main line will provide rail access to another northern residential area. At the same time, recreational travelers will be able to quickly reach popular destinations such as Wandlitzsee and the Schorfheide. As part of the i2030 infrastructure program, eight new stations are to be built along the approximately 14-kilometer-long route. The starting point is Wilhelmsruh station, where the building permit, known in technical jargon as the "planning approval decision," has already been obtained. A new platform for the Heidekrautbahn will be built on a railway embankment next to the S-Bahn station. The previous station was located in a similar location, but at street level. The visualizations show what the new Wilhelmsruh station will look like in the future. Work began in November 2024 and is expected to continue until the end of 2025. The reconstruction of the former Berlin-Rosenthal station is planned north of Wilhelmsruher Damm. In the future, Heidekrautbahn trains will be able to stop here at 140-meter-long, barrier-free platforms. Furthermore, two trains will be able to pass each other on the single-track line at the new Berlin-Rosenthal station. Furthermore, transfers to various bus lines on Wilhelmsruher Damm to Wittenau and to the M1 tram line to Pankow will be possible. The new station will connect large parts of the eastern part of the Märkisches Viertel to the railway network. Including the residents of the Rosenthal district, around 36,000 people live in the catchment area of the new station. The new rail service will become particularly attractive once the planned connection of the Heidekrautbahn from Berlin-Wilhelmsruh to the Berlin-Gesundbrunnen long-distance station is completed in the future.
