As one of the most modern event venues in Germany, the architect and head of the design department of the West Berlin building authority Bruno Grimmek, together with Werner Düttmann and his architect colleague Werner Klenke, planned this event hall for Messe Berlin.

A building with a varied broadcasting history but with beautiful, timeless architecture.

The memorial with the Eternal Flame was erected in 1955 by the "Regional Association of German Expellees" on what was then Reichskanzlerplatz (since 1963 Theodor-Heuss-Platz) and inaugurated by Federal President Theodor Heuss with the lighting of the flame. It is a cast stone block with an iron sacrificial bowl, in which an eternal flame was intended to burn until reunification. However, it was not removed after reunification but preserved as a memorial to the victims of flight and expulsion.
