"Wilhelm, we want to buy all the way to the Rhine!" Caroline von Erlanger (née von Bernus, 1843-1918) urged her husband Wilhelm (1834-1909). The wealthy Nieder-Ingelheim couple expanded their property from Binger Straße to the riverbank and had the expensive Rheinklause built there in 1893. Although technically state-of-the-art, the hermitage was intended to evoke medieval Europe with its cross vaults, massive ironwork, and knight paintings. The von Erlanger family used the building and its surrounding park as a pleasant retreat with a view of the "Father Rhine"—they celebrated with friends, swam, and rowed here. This is how it is described on the city of Ingelheim's website. A truly beautiful building, which unfortunately has been left to its own devices. It's a shame; it would be a lovely destination, especially a good place for a rest.
